How does Herbatint compare to other permanent hair colors on the market today?

Herbatint contains no ammonia or alcohol. Our hair color is dermatologically tested safe for sensitive skin. Also, our hair color is low in peroxide (3%, volume 10).

Does the amount of grey affect my shade selection?

Yes. If you have 30% of grey hair or more, you must select an N series shade to use in your formula. Please refer to this guide for further information.

Is grey hair more resistant to color?

Yes. Grey hair is coarser and slower to absorb color. Because of this, apply hair color to roots first. In this way, you will extend the processing time on the grey hair and give the color more time to absorb. Please refer tothisguide for further information.

What volume is your developer?

The developer is a volume 10 or 3% peroxide.

Am I able to mix the shades together to create my own color formula?

Yes. Our 28 shades are mixable. Please refer to this guide for further information.

Can I use this hair color with permed hair?

We recommend waiting at least 14 days before coloring hair and always do a strand test.

Can I use Herbatint Permanent Hair Color over Henna?

No. We do not recommend using permanent hair color over hair treated with henna.

My hair is dark brown. Will I be able to get it to a light blonde using Herbatint hair colors?

No. Since the developer is so gentle, you will only be able to lighten hair about one shade.

I get a lot of unwanted red tones. What can I do to correct them?

Using a shade from our C Series (Ash) will help to counteract/correct any brassy or red tones.

I’m recovering from/have cancer. Can I use Herbatint?

Even though Herbatint’s formulas are gentle, we always recommend that you consult with your physician before coloring your hair.

Can I use the Herbatint to color my facial hair, such as beard, mustache, eyebrows, or lashes?

No! Please do not use Herbatint products on your face.

How often can I color my hair using Herbatint?

We recommend waiting at least 14 days in between coloring.

I got some dye on my skin. Will it wash off?

Yes. Try using some lemon juice on the area to help get the color out. However, since this is a dye, it may stain skin for a day or two if left on for too long.

Will Herbatint stain my clothing?

Yes. We recommend using the cape included in our Herbatint Application Kit to protect clothing.

I went way too dark. What can I do to fade the color?

Using a clarifying or dandruff shampoo for a few days after dyeing will help to fade the color.

What happens if I choose a color that is too dark for me? Can I lighten multiple shades with Herbatint?

No. Herbatint can only lighten your color about one shade. If you are trying to lighten multiple shades, Herbatint will not work.

Does the permanent hair color run dark or light?

The Herbatint colors run about 1-1.5 shades darker than colors you may be used to using. A good rule of thumb is to choose a color that is about 1-2 shades lighter than what you would normally select.

Is Herbatint all natural?

No. While Herbatint contains natural herbal extracts, there is a 5% chemical content.

Is Herbatint gluten free?

Yes. Herbatint is gluten free.

Is Herbatint vegan?

Yes. Herbatint is vegan.

Does Herbatint contain alcohol?

No. Herbatint does not contain alcohol.

Does Herbatint contain parabens?

Does Herbatint contain PPD?

Yes. Herbatint does contain PPD or Paraphenylenediamine. There is a .34% amount in our Herbatint.

I have a PPD allergy. Can I use Herbatint Permanent Hair Color?

No. We do not recommend using Herbatint Permanent Hair Color if you have a PPD allergy. However, you may use Herbatint Henna Hair Color.

Why doesn’t Herbatint come with an applicator bottle?

Herbatint does not believe in manufacturing single use plastics. We offer an Application Kit that contains a reusable brush, measuring cup, and protective cape to reduce plastic consumption.

Is the fragrance in the shampoo and conditioner natural?

The fragrance in the shampoo and conditioner are a mix of natural and synthetic components.

Do Herbatint products contain soy?

Yes, Herbatint permanent hair color gels and root touch-up products do contain soy‑derived ingredients—specifically Glycine soja (soybean) oil and soy‑derived lecithin.

Does Herbatint have an expiration date? I have an old box of Herbatint, can I still use it?

Herbatint Hair Colors do not have an expiration date or shelf life. As long as they are stored properly, they can still be used years after purchase. Keep between 50° - 86° F in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

I finished dyeing my hair, and I have extra developer and gel. How should I store unmixed product?

Keep Herbatint between 50° - 86° F in a dry place away from direct sunlight for optimal storage.

Can I use Herbatint to get highlights, balayage, etc.?

No, you cannot create highlights or balayage using Herbatint.

Is it nickel free?

Yes, Herbatint is nickel free and does not contain any metals.
